About the braid
This braid is one of 4 I made trying different ways of using 10 threads to make a variant of “Flat 8”. The chevrons are still present, and can be made on either side of the braid. This is very similar to another Flat 10 braid – the only difference is the order of crossing the threads in step 10. Each time you make a crossing move, the threads lie in the same order as the threads below them.
How to use the designer
Use the colour picker to choose your thread colour. If you use it on the braid, it will be added to your colour list so you can easily choose it again. Click on the thread you want to colour in the braid diagram.
Some braids allow you to change the number of threads. If available, you can use the "+" and "-" buttons to change the number of threads - active internet connection required.
Marudai instructions
Notice the the arrows in steps 5 and 10 - it is important to make sure that the thread following the unbroken arrow is on top of the other. I like to drop the tama on moves 2 and 7 - this prevents bulging of the threads.
Disk instructions
Notice the the arrows in steps 5 and 11 - it is important to make sure that the thread following the unbroken arrow is on top of the other. I find it easier if, in moves 1 and 7, I make sure I move the top thread (from the previous crossover) first.
Steps 2 and 8 can make a big difference to the appearance of the braid. Too little pull gives bulging threads, too much and the threads disappear. If you look at the point of braid (look at picture of point of braid following step 2, where the green threads have just been moved), (a) no pull gives a U on the thread you move, (b) a lot of pull makes this thread come straight across, (c) I aim for having the thread go out to the side of the braid before coming across.
- This braid was derived by ourselves.
