About the braid
This braid has spirals of smaller and longer stitches alternating along the length of the braid. With looser tension the longer threads may be pronounced enough to form slight ridges. This is because there are different group sizes.
Unlike our other 25 thread braid (2×5 + 3×5 Kongoh Gumi), the groups of 2 and 3 alternate. This means that the braid itself is straight and doesn’t spiral.
How to use the designer
Use the colour picker to choose your thread colour. If you use it on the braid, it will be added to your colour list so you can easily choose it again. Click on the thread you want to colour in the braid diagram.
Some braids allow you to change the number of threads. If available, you can use the "+" and "-" buttons to change the number of threads - active internet connection required.
32 slot disk instructions
This is similar to a standard 16 thread kongoh-gumi braid, but with different sized groups. This pattern is showing how the 25 threads can be worked on a 32 slot disk. We have to be careful how we use the free space.
Start with the threads arranged as in diagram 1. The top group should have 2 free spaces to its left, all other spaces are just 1 slot. Then move the threads as shown in diagrams 2 and 3. After this, rotate the disk anti-clockwise so that the next group of 5 is at the top. Now you repeat the same set of moves over and over again, for example as shown in steps 4-6, until the braid is finished.
You should find that when you have 5 threads together, the group of 2 is on the anticlockwise side (i.e. to the left at the top and to the right at the bottom), and when you are working with a group of 3, it is separated from the groups of 2 either side. Spotting this helps to keep track of your threads.
40 slot disk instructions
This is similar to a standard 16 thread kongoh-gumi braid, but with different sized groups. As you work the braid the slot numbers will change - always take the top right thread down and the bottom left thread up. This pattern is shown on a 40 slot disk for clarity. The other disk pattern shows how it can be done on a 32 slot disk.
